چکیده

The minimization problem for Horn formulas is to find a Horn formula equivalent to a given Horn formula, using a minimum number of clauses. A 2 1−ǫ(n)-inapproximability result is proven, which is the first non-trivial inapproximability result for this problem. We also consider several other versions of Horn minimization. The more general version which allows for the introduction of new variables is known to be too strong as its equivalence problem is co-NP-complete. Therefore, we propose a variant called Steinerminimization, which allows for the introduction of new variables in a restricted manner. Steiner-minimization of Horn formulas is shown to be MAX-SNP-hard. In the positive direction, a o(n), namely, O(n log log n/(log n))-approximation algorithm is given for the Steiner-minimization of definite Horn formulas. The algorithm is based on a new result in algorithmic extremal graph theory, on partitioning bipartite graphs into complete bipartite graphs, which may be of independent interest. Inapproximability results and approximation algorithms are also given for restricted versions of Horn minimization, where only clauses present in the original formula may be used.

Horn Minimization by Iterative Decomposition 1

The problem of Horn minimization can be stated as follows: given a Horn CNF representing a Boolean function f , nd a CNF representation of f which consists of a minimum possible number of clauses. This problem is the formalization of the problem of knowledge compression for speeding up queries to propositional Horn expert systems, and it is known to be NP-hard. In this paper we present a linear...

On the Gap between the Complexity of SAT and Minimization for Certain Classes of Boolean Formulas

It is a wellknown fact that the satisfiability problem (SAT) for Boolean formulas in a conjunctive normal form (CNF) is NP complete, i.e. Σ1 complete. It is also known that the decision version of Boolean minimization for CNF inputs is Σ2 complete. On the other hand there are several subclasses of CNFs (e.g. Horn CNFs) for which SAT is known to be in P = Σ0 while the minimization problem is Σ1 ...

On Discontinuity-preserving Optic Flow

We investigate a modiication of Horn and Schunck's approach which leads to a better preservation of ow discontinuities. It replaces the quadratic smoothness term by a nonquadratic one. Energy minimization by steepest descent leads to a system of two nonlinear diiusion{reaction equations with a single common nonlinear diiusivity. This enables us to make use from techniques for nonlinear diiusion...

Improving approximate inverses based on Frobenius norm minimization

Approximate inverses, based on Frobenius norm minimization, of real nonsingular matrices are analyzed from a purely theoretical point of view. In this context, this paper provides several sufficient conditions, that assure us the possibility of improving (in the sense of the Frobenius norm) some given approximate inverses. Moreover, the optimal approximate inverses of matrix A ∈ R, among all ma...
